Christian Kick-Ass
28 July 2004
Christianity Today sees in The Bourne Supremacy a Christian message: "on the rare occasion that [the Matt Damon characer] has to knock someone out, he does it so quickly, with moves so lightning-fast, that you'd almost miss them if you blinked." Well, amen to that. Reviewer Peter T. Chattaway offers up some intriguing observations on the theology of action movies -- "Most amnesia movies," he writes, "are ultimately about redemption -- someone's slate is wiped clean so that he or she can start again" -- but also takes a surprisingly positive view of violence. After concluding a very positive accounting of the film with the suggestion that it teaches us the meaning of justice, Christianity Today's "Family Corner" notes that The Bourne Supremacy contains "a lot of punching, kicking, shooting, stabbing, threatening, and crashing of vehicles at high speeds," not to mention a close-up on our hero's face while he slowly strangles an enemy to death, but "no sexual activity."
