Interfaith Inspiration and the Jerry Springer Protests
07 January 2005
Britain's Evangelical Alliance draws on the example of the violent Sikh protests of a controversial play to encourage Christians not to "'stand by and let this happen.'" "This" would be the upcoming BBC broadcast of Jerry Springer -- The Opera, a musical satire of The Jerry Springer Show that depicts God, Satan, the Virgin Mary and a Jesus who's "a bit gay." The EA, as well as the Bishop of Manchester and numerous citizens, have protested that the show is "transparently blasphemous," likely to cause "grave offense," and worse yet, "clever and literate." The EA's head of theology, Rev. Dr. David Hilborn, said that "'the very professionalism and artistry which has won it so many awards make it the more disturbing phenomenon from a Christian point of view.'"
