Crazy for the Anti-Christ
08 April 2005
Protestant pope-mania: What does it mean? For insight into the evangelical adoration of the man Martin Luther, the Westminster Confession, and generations of fundamentalists insisted must, by virtue of his office, be the anti-Christ, no better source can be found than Ted Olsen's Christianity Today survey of the evangelical press, "'Anti-Christ' No More." Chuck Colson, reformed Nixon dirty-trickster-made-good-as-M.o.G (Man of God), says the pope had really beautiful blue eyes. Ted Haggard, president of the 30-million strong National Association of Evangelics, puts in first place the pope's commitment to keeping gays from getting married. Blogger John H. goes for the language of spiritual war: "Salute the man, not the rank." Yes, we're sniping a bit at some of the shallower comments; but Olsen's article is at the deep end, as are many of the commentators he gathers, such as historian Mark Noll, Mark Bailey, and Rod Dreher. Apparently, though, the pope did not inspire many evangelical women to speak -- Olsen links to 17 Christian men and nary a single woman, an odd omission; we've heard a few of the pope's positions had to do with the ladies and their bodies. You know what we mean.
