The H-Word
17 October 2005
Interfaith offense was given this week in Virginia's gubernatorial race, after Republican nominee, Jerry W. Kilgore, launched a new ad-campaign attacking Democrat candidate Timothy M. Kaine's opposition to the death penalty as a position that would let "even Hitler" off the hook. Which holy toes were stepped on? At least two: first, in the Kilgore campaign's use of the H-analogy on the day after Yom Kippur -- which was strongly criticized by Jewish groups for both its bad timing and its trivializing comparison of common murder with the Holocaust -- and second, in the attack itself, which Kaine, a Catholic opponent of the death penalty, is characterizing as a personal attack on his faith.
