Straight Religion
09 January 2006
Knight Chair of Media and Religion at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California, and our colleague here at The Revealer, Diane Winston, deconstructs the "Book of Daniel" debacle, suggesting that the real story isn't the alleged mockery of Christianity that the American Family Association claimed it was, or even the liberal church vs. conservative church set-up played in the media. Rather, she writes, it's the demonstrated difficulty of "playing religion straight" in a television series -- not featuring it as something scary, sweet or slapstick, but as a serious topic, like emergency room care or counter-terrorism units, that's worthy of a serious treatment.
