The Next Taliban?
18 July 2006
The good news, we guess, is that the old "domino theory" of the Cold War is really dead. The bad news is that as a result, the press is mostly ignoring the transformation of Somalia into a Taliban state. The press paid attention when Islamic forces routed the warlords of Mogadishu, who'd been backed by the U.S., but since then there's been little news -- but much happening. Power and Interest News Report sifts the struggle between two Islamist factions -- one moderate, one militant -- and a weak coalition of warlord. Also in the mix, two regional powers: the brutal, ostensibly Islamic regime of Sudan, and the anxious, ethnically Christian government of Ethiopia.
