Nicaragua's Ban on Abortion
28 November 2006
Nicole Greenfield: In a Revealer piece posted yesterday, Nora Connor critiqued major U.S. papers for not reporting the religion part of Daniel Ortega's recent presidential campaign and (re)election. She specifically cited Ortega's push to pass a bill banning abortion in order to attract Catholic voters and argued that press "comments on Ortega's willingness to trade on the lives of Nicaraguan women were restricted to mid-October or post-election stories on the law itself." Unfortunately, almost a month after Ortega's return to power, not much has changed. Although a story on the ban got front-page privilege in today's Washington Post, it somehow still seemed to miss the religion story within.
