Thanks for Lying
22 March 2007
Obama's powerhouse pastor, Jeremiah Wright, talks back to The New York Times' Jodi Kantor: "Thank you for engaging in one of the biggest misrepresentations of the truth I have ever seen in sixty-five years," opens Wright, and then he gets mad. It's a beautiful letter, and we take great pleasure in reading it -- even though, to be fair, we think Kantor did her job. Wright's basic complaint -- "we spent two hours talking, and you didn't think the same things were important that I did" -- is the gripe of every journalistic subject who doesn't get that the final edit belongs to the journalist, not the subject.
