Free Speech? My Speech.
29 October 2007
"Free speech," declared conservative writer Phyllis Chessler in observance of "Islamofascism Awareness Week," "belongs also to those of us who are pro-American and pro-Israel, and not only to those who demonize the West." Barnard scholar Elizabeth Castelli, meanwhile, points out that the very term "Islamofascism" is designed to "close off debate, impose a particular position and set of arguments, and invite the harassment of individuals who hold alternative positions. It casts the world situation in a clash-of-civilizations mode--and places any critic in the position of being anti-Western, or even treasonous." Esther Kaplan reports.
